You’d be hard pressed to find more variety in natural scenery. The Öræfi region has tons to offer and is well suited for a few days’ stay. The area boasts of national parks and nature reserves; vibrant woodlands, majestic waterfalls, mighty mountains, giant glaciers, iceberg lagoons, black sand beaches, moss land, birdlife and the list goes on. Öræfi is truly renowned for its diverse landscape and it’s no wonder that the area has become one of Iceland’s most visited places.
Frequently asked questions
Nonhamar is located in a small village called Hof, some 20 kilometers southeast of Skaftafell National Park. If you’re coming from the west, you will have to drive for 15-20 minutes after you pass the entrance to the Skaftafell Park. If you’re coming from the east, you will have to drive for 30-35 minutes after you pass Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon.

No, we don’t provide any food or beverages. The cottages are self-catering.
Please note that there is no supermarket in this area. There’s just a small convenience store that doubles as a restaurant and a petrol station. It’s located in Freysnes (opposite of Hotel Skaftafell).
Since there are not many shopping options in the area, it might be a good idea to stop somewhere along the way to buy some groceries. There are grocery stores in all the small towns in the south. Also in Höfn if you’ll be coming from the east.
The easiest option would be the restaurant/shop in Freysnes (opposite of Hotel Skaftafell).
A fancier option would be the restaurant at Fosshotel Glacier Lagoon, which is located close by. For further information and table reservations please call +354 514 8300, or look them up online.
Yes, you can park right in front of your cottage. Parking is free.
The best hiking trails are located in Skaftafell. The wide variety of trails allows anyone to find routes that are as long or as short as desired. Hiking maps are available at the Skaftafell Visitor Center and suggestions for a few popular routes can be found here.
Local Guide of Vatnajökull and Melrakki Adventures are great choices for glacier activities of all sorts.
From Coast To Mountains offers splendid Puffin tours to the Ingólfshöfði Nature Reserve.
Boat tours are also available at the Fjallsárlón and Jökulsárlón glacial lagoons.
Cancellations must be made four days prior to check-in date. If cancellations are made after this time, a fee of room cost for 1 night may be charged. In case of no show, the total price of the reservation will be charged.
